Home Education

Exploring and learning with practical science.

PRACTICAL SCIENCE TO SUPPORT HOME EDUCATION

Fab Science are excited to launch a new series of workshops designed especially for the local home education community. Each session will be full of hands on experiments and investigations, allowing children of different ages (and their parents!) to explore and create together. Each term, we will focus on a different area of science. We’ll start the summer term with physics, especially looking at forces. We’ll even make the most of the outdoor space at the venue to investigate various types of rocket launches! Later on, we’ll move onto other topics in biology and chemistry.

WHO RUNS THE WORKSHOPS?

The workshops are designed and led by Emma Ranade, a qualified science teacher with several years’ experience in mainstream and special schools. She has taught science in schools from Year 1 to Year 11 and has worked with thousands of children through Fab Science events. She plans to make the sessions a mix of structured activities and more child-led exploration and experimentation. Parents/carers are welcome to get involved and Emma values any feedback on the activities.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

We provide all of the experiments, equipment and safety goggles. There will be squash and water available as well as something to keep us all going at snack-time. At some workshops your young scientist may bring home some of their creations, as well as ideas on ‘kitchen science’ to do at home. Please note that a responsible adult needs to stay on site throughout the activities.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Please remember that science can get messy so please wear clothes that you don’t mind being ‘experimented’ in. We may also be going outside for rocket launches or other activities so bring coats/hats/scarves/sun cream/whatever the British weather decides! Shoes that you can run around in are also a good idea.

WHEN, WHERE AND HOW MUCH?

We have two venues running on alternate Fridays: Great Hallingbury (10:30-12) and Little Walden (12:45-2:15) and one fortnightly on Mondays: Coombes Community Centre in Royston (10:30-12).

See below for the timetable for the summer term. Please contact us if you want to mix-and-match sessions in different venues.

You can book the full term for £65 (-12.5% for additional siblings) or  individual sessions for £12 per 90 minute workshop (additional siblings are discounted to £10.50). The Royston and Little Walden groups are easy to pick and choose your sessions, at Great Hallingbury the system is a bit more complicated, sorry! If you want to book one session, use the ‘trial’ option on the booking page. For multiple days, just book a day without making payment and email emma@fabscience.co.uk with your required dates. We’ll sort it out for you and send an amended invoice.

MY CHILD HAS SEN, WILL THE WORKSHOPS BE SUITABLE?

Absolutely! Our sessions are run by a qualified teacher, experienced in working with children in mainstream and special schools and outside of schools. It is important that we know about any specific needs beforehand to make sure that we can tailor activities to suit. As parents are involved in the sessions, we welcome and feedback and are happy to be led by the interests of the children.

ARE THE ACTIVITIES SAFE?

All of our experiments are specifically chosen to be kid-safe. We use child-friendly materials and have safety goggles for volcanic ‘eruptions’ etc. While we do not use anything toxic, we do make sure that children know that they mustn’t eat anything in the ‘lab’. Our leaders are DBS checked, insured and first aid trained.

WHAT IF I CAN’T MAKE IT?

Unfortunately we can’t offer refunds for cancellations but you can switch the place to a future date if we have at least 48 hours notice. If you have taken advantage of the special offer term price, we will not be able to offer this credit. You may book a combination of sessions at different venues. Please get in touch if you would like to do this.

WILL YOU RUN ANY EVENTS NEAR ME?

We are hoping to reach home education communities across Hertfordshire, Essex and Cambridgeshire. Please do get in touch if you would like us to run sessions in your local area.
